Why Data Center Efficiency?
On August 2, 2007 in a report to the United States Congress, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that the energy used to power and cool servers and data centers is significant in theSome of the biggest users of electricity are local, state and federal government agencies and government contractors. The potential for cost savings and efficient use of energy across these enterprises and agencies going forward is massive.
GEAR was created to serve this market
of local, state and federal agencies and their contractors to assist them save money on their electricity bills and also receive cash incentives from electrical utility companies. The US Department of Energy (DOE) leads a national level program to increase public awareness of energy efficiency programs and products and need for energy management at home, business and industrial levels and is championing efforts to provide incentives to all these user types. The incentive programs are mandated by the state public utility commissions and in CA by the PUC. According to PG&E the program administered by the CA PUC is mandatory and is the same across all utilities in the state.Utility companies driving the reduction
California’s utility companies, for example, prompted by DoE and the CA PUC, are driving to reduce the appetite and consumption of energy costs and workers with customers, partners, service companies, consultants, vendors and others to create and adopt products and technology that improve efficient use of electricity regardless of producing source (most is coal) and to provide incentives to companies and agencies that embrace the program.more
