Container based Data Centers

Container based data centers allow mobility, critical office space savings and equipment refresh yielding reduced energy costs and operational gains.
Completed in 2006, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Molecular Foundry is a state-of-the-art 6-story, 94,500 square-foot, $67 million User Facility for Nanoscale Materials, dedicated to supporting research in nanoscience by researchers from institutions around the world. From an energy- and water-management standpoint, this project embodies best practices in three major “high-tech” facility types, specifically wet and dry laboratories, a cleanroom, and a data center.
Each of these spaces is highly resource-intensive and poses greater sustainability challenges than ordinary spaces. It is rare to find all three facility types under one roof. This project is the most comprehensive “Green” building constructed in LBNL’s site’s 75-year history, and the first to apply for a U.S. Green Building Council “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” (LEED) certification. The facility has among the lowest electricity intensities of 56 projects currently included in the Labs21 benchmarking database, and is responsible for 85% fewer greenhouse-gas emissions than a conventional facility meeting the ASHRAE 90.1 energy standards.
Thanks to right-sizing of the mechanical systems, all of this was achieved at no net cost compared to typical practice. The project is winner of a 2006 Federal Energy Showcase Award, which recognizes buildings that take a comprehensive approach to energy management, and stand out as exceptional models of energy efficiency, innovation, and sustainable design.
Integration Services
The Gear Energy Solutions team also strongly supports application of energy efficiency in the overall development of customer and enterprise business planning and in fostering local, state and national programs that focus on delivery of cost effective energy services.
GEAR works with its clients and partners as well as advocacy groups to insure energy policy is in the national interest and applied at the local level.
This includes monitoring the spending of appropriated American tax dollars for realistic and meaningful ROI energy programs under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and also the American Clean Energy & Security Act of 2009 (ACES) to see it reaches grass roots users and practical application of innovative solutions.
GEAR supports the establishment of industry standards for energy use measurements at the enterprise level and for incentives and rebates to customers who invest in energy efficiency tools, processes and products.
Complementing our energy efficiency benchmark and rebate process and services the GEAR team provides comprehensive energy management services to selected government and private users. This includes project management, energy measurement and analysis, alternative energy sources and programs including renewable, quality processes and procedures and crisis management scenarios. We work as both prime and subcontractor team members. The management team at GEAR has decades of experience working with US national labs and organizations including mission critical defense, space system and energy facilities and has global experience in power components, products and systems research and development, product development and manufacturing. This includes working with US DoE EPA and labs to create 80 Plus efficiency standards and promote efficient power supply design and development as past board members of the PSMA.
Some areas that GEAR supports with energy services solutions include:
- Identify and evaluate energy-saving opportunities that will cover investment costs
- Engineering designs and specifications;
- Project management from design to installation to monitoring;
- Training and provide ongoing maintenance services
GEAR also works closely with all the power utilities to insure we are compliment with PUC and other regulatory mandates and also to develop and provide energy efficiency training to public and private entities and organizations.
